If you do some research there are plenty of older cameras around still able to produce some decent pictures. They won't be state of the art, but they will often be better quality than many of the basic point and shoot cameras made today. There is risk involved in buying a used camera, but they are often so inexpensive that the risk is slight.
These images are from an old Olympus C2500L, made in 1999. It is a true DSLR camera, with a fixed lens, that sold for over $1000.00 new. Now you can find them for $50.00, still in useable condition. Don't expect them to match the state of the art today, but they will get you started.
